Abstract

Volcanic activity is inseparable from seismic activities and tectonic conditions in the surrounding area. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The results indicate that after the Mw9.0 Aceh earthquake in  2004,  followed  by  subsequent large  aftershocks, has  produced  positive Coulomb stress changes in the region. Those changes have triggered the disruption of Mount Sinabung in 2010, which has been inactive for four centuries. The cross section that divided Mount Sinabung before the eruption in 2013 also showed positive changes in the Coulomb stress at the lower part of Mount Sinabung, up to a depth of 85 km with lobes up to 5 x 10-3 bars
