Abstract

The Musi Segment is one of the seismic active region. Many large earthquakes that cause damage and casualties occurred in this region. The purpose of this paper is to determine the value of the potential energy contained in the Musi Segment through the statistic study since the large earthquake occurred on 1997. Secondary data were used in writing this paper is the data captured through the earthquake catalogs the Kepahiang Geophysical Station and WinITDB database. The method used to calculate the return period, the energy released each year, save energy, and potential energy using the least square method. Based on the analysis, the Musi Segment earthquake save potential energy that has not been released since the 15 Mei 1997 earthquake amounted to 5,0187 x 1021 erg. This energy is equivalent to an earthquake measuring M = 6,6
