Abstract
Abstract. West Sumatra has a natural stretch of coast to the hilly region known as the Bukit Barisan. Topography is very influential on rainfall patterns in the region. Because bordering the sea, influence sea breeze are very stong and barrier mountains causing orografi rain pattern. In this research will be to identify the upper region or regions with high rainfall due to removal of air masses on the mountain slopes and the area under the wind or the rain shadow region. Identification is performed based on the effect layer 850 hPa zonal wind. The results showed that the region Teluk Bayur is a region with high frecuency of heavy rain and Padang Panjang is a region with many rainy day. Zonal wind patterrn which greatly affect the rain is slowing the pattern of winds from the west. This is because the winds from the west bring air that containing water vapor that comes from the sea
